The Arrest of Stephen F. Austin

Picture
This is a drawing of Stephen F. Ausin, the Empresario who led the old 300
Stephen F. Austin was arrested for a very insulting letter and suspicion with the government about ongoings in Texas. He had been arrested on the trip back to Texas after consulting with the vice president about reforms and the Law of April 6th. They argue the first meeting. Afterwards was the letter written containing some content that is exquisite. Then he made up for the meeting afterwards, for Santa Anna "scolded" the vice president for "not angering the only supporter in Texas we have." Then on the way back to Texas, Stephen was arrested on suspicion of rebellion and the letter. He was released a year later after having written to Texas about being arrested.

The Fredonian Revolt

Picture
The Edward Brothers were granted an application for colonization, but when they got there, the land had already been occupied by the Native Americans that had lived there their whole life. At that moment, the Edwards brothers had realized that they had to separate from the Mexican government. They had gathered a group of about 30 people. They were unsuccessful, for the Mexican army was ten times as large. The Edward brothers had even asked that Stephen F. Austin be a part, but he declined and even informed Mexico about it. Though the event had been minor, the Mexican government had become uneasy about rebellions in Texas.

The Mier Y Teran Report and Investigation

Picture
This is a picture of Mier y Teran.
Mier y Teran had come to Texas on orders in 1827 from Mexico concerning Texas and the suspicion of Texas trying to succeed. Mier y Teran came to Texas to find out that Texas had more than twice the amount of settlers than the settlers in Mexico! Alarmed by the report that Mier y Teran brought back, Mexico issued out the Law of April 6th to try to keep down Texas's power. This event was basically the effect of growing tensions between the two territories. There is also the growing amounts of concerns about Santa Anna becoming more and more dictatorous. These are some causes for the revolts against Mexico. Now ask yourself, why did Mier y Teran visit Texas?

LAW OF APRIL 6

Picture
The law of april 6 is the law the Mexican army passed due to the Mier y Teran report and the fredonian revolt. This law stopped immigration, stopped  slaves, and added taxes to imports. This law made anglo immigrant very mad because theycouldn't take their families to Texas because of the no immigration law. Anglo American immigrants also got mad because the law didn't allow people to own to  have slaves, since they couldn't have slaves they got mad because slaves were already part of their life style. They were also mad because they had to pay extra just to get things that are made in theirown country.

Something to Think About

The Law of April 6th was passed after shocking discoveries by Mier y Teran. The law had enraged the people in Texas. If the law hadn't been passed, the Anahuac events, Arrest of Stephen, and Consultation wouldn't have occured. Texas probably would have stayed "dependent" for more than 15 years. Why do you think that the Law of April 6th was passed and why did Santa Anna pass it with regard to Stephen?

This letter is a letter from Stephen F. Austin to James Fannin and Lorenzo de Zavala. It is talking about the army and battle. This letter was written on November 1st, 1835. This was one of the multiple letters from Stephen concerning the war, and the Consultation.

Consultation

Picture
Consultation was a gathering of the Texans that are worried about the dictatorship of Mexico. There were two parties: a War Party and a Peace Party. The war party approved of the Consultation, but the Peace party was not. By the names, you could tell which one wanted war and which didn't. The decision was unaminous though. WAR! VICTORY OR DEATH! Though as you can see, Texas has won!
